HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! :) :) :) :)I've had a great year and a half back in my hometown of Ames, Iowa. For the last 10 months I was working for Conservation Corps Iowa doing a lot of brush removal, tree cutting and invasive species management. With a crew of four other people, I got to travel all over the state and into Illinois, Minnesota, North Dakota and Nebraska, and learned loads about our natural (and invasive species) heritage in the Midwest. It was a great experience and proved - to my great surprise - that I am actually capable of doing physical labor full time in all seasons and types of weather. Some days were more fun than others, but I loved it. loved it. loved it. :)
And now I'm heading out on another adventure- this time with the aim of checking out a possible future in sustainable agriculture... I'm going to McIntosh, NM to learn how to milk goats and make cheese! I'll be working at Old Windmill Dairy from January 5th through at least the end of April (if all goes as planned), after which I'll be looking for a job on a veggie/fruit farm somewhere...most likely in New Mexico, but who really knows. :) Very exciting. I'll miss Iowa and all my nearby friends and family very much, but I know I'll be back at some point.
So I'll try to keep you all updated with my goings on...and will hopefully have lots to share about all the new things I'll be doing and learning with these crazy New Mexican goats. And there will be baby goat pictures: lots of baby goat pictures.
